There are literally thousands of
organizations worldwide engaged in promoting sustainable development. Listed
below are organizations that we feel will provide stakeholders and
practitioners in the USA with information, tools, and resources to
jump-start their sustainable community planning and development efforts.



In addition to their specific
resources a number of organizations, e.g., ICLEI, SGA, can also link
stakeholders and practitioners to other communities engaged in sustainable
planning and development.



We also suggest consulting
organizations listed in

ICLEI Local Governments for
Sustainability
http://www.iclei.org



ICLEI is the worlds leading association of cities and local governments dedicated to
sustainable development. ICLEI is a powerful movement of 12 mega-cities, 100
super-cities and urban regions, 450 large cities as well as 450 small and
medium-sized cities and towns in 84 countries.



ICLEIs members include hundreds of
cities/communities in the USA.



Stakeholders and practitioners
will find ICLEI an excellent source for research and publications on
sustainability and practical
Tools including a Sustainable Planning
Toolkit.



International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD)-http://www.iisd.org/



The International Institute
for Sustainable Development is a Canadian-based, international public policy
research institute for sustainable development.



Stakeholders and practitioners may
want to review some of their research and publications  on Indicators and
the Bellagio Principles for sustainable development.



PlaNYC-http://www.nyc.gov/html/planyc2030/html/home/home.shtml



PLaNYC for New York City,is
considered to be one of  the most comprehensive sustainable development
plans to date.



Can provide stakeholders and
practitioners with examples of sustainability  indicators, benchmarks,
goals, etc,



The U.S. Green Building Council (USGB)-http://www.usgbc.org/?gclid=CM-Dv7-D5bICFcuh4AodOwEAgg



USGB is committed to a
prosperous and sustainable future through cost-efficient and energy-saving
green buildings. Our community of leaders is working to make green buildings
available to everyone within a generation.



Stakeholders and practitioners may
want to consult the LEED green building program as a leading resource for
developing energy efficient buildings.



Smart Growth America (SGA)-http://www.smartgrowthamerica.org



SGA advocates for people
who want to live and work in great neighborhoods. We believe smart growth
solutions support businesses and jobs, provide more options for how people get
around and make it more affordable to live near work and the grocery store. Our
coalition works with communities to fight sprawl and save money. We are making
America
s neighborhoods great together. It is the
only national coalition of state and local organizations working for smart
growth across the country.



Stakeholders and practitioners may
want to consider joining the coalition and reviewing their research,
publications and sustainable
tools.



The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)- https://www.globalreporting.org



GRI is a non-profit
organization that promotes economic, environmental and
social sustainability. GRI provides all companies and organizations with a
comprehensive sustainability reporting framework that is widely used around the
world.



Stakeholders and practitioners may
want to consider utilizing their reporting methodology in their community
s Monitoring and Evaluation process.



American Planning Association (APA)-https://www.planning.org/



Stakeholders and practitioners may
want to review the Associations publications on Community Indicators.



HUD-DOT-EPA Partnership for Sustainable Communities http://www.epa.gov/smartgrowth/partnership/index.html



Stakeholders and practitioners can
apply to the Partnership for multimillion dollar grants to fund sustainable
community planning and development, and for free technical
assistance/consulting on a variety of sustainable projects.



The Center for Transit-Oriented Development (CTOD)- http://ctod.org/mission.php



CTOD is the leading
national entity dedicated to providing innovative practices, policy reform,
research, analysis, and investment tools to support TOD implementation. CTOD is
particularly attuned to opportunities to leverage and catalyze market interests
to support TOD, while also identifying the mechanisms through which benefits
can be shared equitably by low and moderate-income people.



Transit-oriented development, or
TOD, is a type of community development that includes a mixture of housing,
office, retail and/or other commercial development and amenities integrated
into a walkable neighborhood and located within a half-mile of quality public
transportation.



Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT)- http://www.cnt.org/



Since 1978, Center for
Neighborhood Technology (CNT) has been a leader in promoting 
urban sustainability
the more effective use of existing resources and community assets to
improve the health of natural systems and the wealth of people, today and in
the future.



CNT is a creative think-and-do
tank that combines rigorous research with effective solutions. CNT works across
disciplines and issues, including transportation and community development,
energy, water, and climate change.



Reconnecting America- http://reconnectingamerica.org/



Reconnecting America is a
national nonprofit that advises civic and community leaders on how to overcome
the challenges associated with community development, to create better
communities for all. Reconnecting America not only develops research and innovate
public policy, but we also build on-the-ground partnerships and convene the
players necessary to accelerate decision-making.



Global Green USA-     http://globalgreen.org/greenurbanism/cities/



Global Green USA works in
partnership with local governments and other public agencies that are ready to
do sustainability. We help these entities
create innovative and replicable policies, programs, and procedures so that
sustainable practices become standard in the planning, design, construction,
and operation of the built environment.



Livability Solutions-    http://livabilitysolutions.org/?page_id=11



Livability Solutions is a coalition of professionals who can
help you put your planning priorities into action. The partnership was
initiated by 10 leading nonprofit organizations with deep experience in
sustainable development. Our common purpose is to work with communities on
transportation, land use, Placemaking, environmental issues, and public
involvement, with the goal of achieving livability, smart growth, and
sustainability.
